LOCAL RULES:
- BUNKERS: There are NO bunkers as defined by the USGA. All sandy areas will be played as in the general area. A player does not receive free relief for an embedded ball in a sandy area.
- SAND CART PATHS: A player does not receive free relief if their ball comes to rest on a sand cart path or if the sand cart path interferes with a player’s stance or swing.
- OUT OF BOUNDS is defined by white stakes and the inside edge of all paved public roads. A ball that crosses a road and comes to rest on any other part of the course other than the hole being played, the ball is defined as out of bounds.
MATCH FORMAT:
- MODIFIED ALTERNATE SHOT: Both players on the team will hit a tee shot and then choose one of the shots as the team’s ball. The player who did not hit the selected tee shot will play the 2nd shot. The two players will alternate shots until the ball is holed.

MATCH PLAY OVERVIEW
MATCH PLAY: Match Play is a format of play that is scored in a hole-by-hole competition. The side that completes the hole in less strokes than their opponents wins that particular hole.
WINNING: The side who has won the most holes wins the match. When a side is winning by more holes than there are holes remaining to be played, the match is won by that side. A match can be won before all 9 or 18 holes are played. For example, if a side wins the first 10 holes, the side has won the match because there are only 8 holes left to play. In the Linville Cup, each winning match is awarded 2 points toward the team total and tied matches are awarded 1 point.
STATUS OF A MATCH: All players are expected to know the match score at all times. The match score is defined as “holes up” by the side that has won the most holes or the match is tied, also known as ‘all square”. Therefore, a side that has won the first two holes would be “2 up”.
TIED HOLE: A tied hole is a hole where opponents complete the hole in the same number of strokes. The opponents are said to have "tied" the hole and the status of the match remains the same.
Match play allows for specific rules that differ from stroke play. Below are some of the most important:
- Communicating Information
Sides compete solely against each other on every hole, they can see each other’s play and can protect their own interests. Players on the same side can provide advice to their teammate. Players must not give wrong information to their opponents on the number of strokes or penalty strokes during the play of a hole.
- Rules Issues During a Round
the players in a match may agree on how to decide a Rules issue and the agreement is conclusive even if it turns out to have been wrong under the Rules of golf as long as the players did not deliberately agree to ignore a Rule or known penalty; if there is no agreement, any player can request a ruling and should do so by informing their opponents of the circumstances before beginning a new hole. Playing a second ball is NOT allowed in match play formats.
- Breach of Rule in Match Play
General Penalty for breach of a Rule in Match Play is loss of hole and not two strokes. For example, in alternate shot formats, if the wrong player on a team plays a shot, that side loses the hole.
- Order of Play
Players must play in a specific order. At the first tee, the order of play is determined by the draw. The side who wins a hole has the honor at the next teeing area. During play of a hole, the ball that is farther from the hole is to be played first. If a side plays out of order, the stroke may be recalled by their opponents.
- Concessions
Concessions should be made clearly. A side may concede their opponents next stroke at any time when their opponent’s ball is at rest and the opponents are considered to have holed out with that next stroke. A hole may be conceded at any time and a hole may be considered tied once any player has hit a stroke on that hole.
Exempt players must accept their spot in the event and register by this date. After this date, their spot will be offered to the next player on the waiting list.
